The Danger of Neglecting

The Danger of Neglecting

A NOTE FROM PASTOR MARK:

We recognize that family worship has its unique challenges depending on your family’s size and stage of life. Therefore, we have prepared a complete worship service (below) for our entire church family because we are convinced that Sunday is so much more than a sermon. And this is one way for us to be worshiping the same way even though we are apart.

We suggest that you test the worship and sermon links before you gather your family. After you have done this, we encourage the leader of the house to read the prayers and appoint other readers as necessary to encourage greatest participation.

After the sermon is over, we encourage you to discuss the sermon and ways to live out its application.

TEXT: Hebrews 2:2-8

ONLINE WORSHIP SERVICE (8.30.2020)

CALL TO WORSHIP:

As we come to worship today, let us remember that the Lord is the king of the earth….

Psalms 47:6
6 Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises.
7 For God is the King of all the earth; sing to him a psalm of praise.

OPENING WORSHIP:

“Sing to the King”

“Dwell”

“O Praise the Name”

affirmation:

What a great description of our hope!? We have a Savior who was crucified, died, was buried, rose from the grave, and is returning to rescue us and reign!

Yet for the time being we are left to wait. And in this time of waiting there can be a lot of pain and difficulty and heart ache. And as Mark mentioned in his sermon last week, it is during times like these that we can learn to lament before the Lord, which means being honest about our pain and struggles yet still turning in faith to the Lord. So let’s pray this lament together from Psalm 6.

Psalms 6:1    LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath.
2 Have mercy on me, LORD, for I am faint; heal me, LORD, for my bones are in agony.
3 My soul is in deep anguish. How long, LORD, how long?
4 Turn, LORD, and deliver me; save me because of your unfailing love.
5 Among the dead no one proclaims your name. Who praises you from the grave?
6 I am worn out from my groaning. All night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears.
7 My eyes grow weak with sorrow; they fail because of all my foes.
8 Away from me, all you who do evil, for the LORD has heard my weeping.
9 The LORD has heard my cry for mercy; the LORD accepts my prayer.
10 All my enemies will be overwhelmed with shame and anguish; they will turn back and suddenly be put to shame.

And we can look forward to the time when God will deal with all of his enemies and the enemies of his people. There is a time of perfect justice coming. A time of final rest and healing.

Worship:

“Is He Worthy”

prayer:

Lord we admit that we are groaning. You told us that all of creation “was subjected to futility” and that “the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now” (Romans 8:20, 22).

But Lord our pain is not hopeless, senseless pain without any purpose. Rather it is like a woman going through labor. There is a massive reason to keep going through the struggle. You said “that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God” (Romans 8:21). You are going to come again and undo the curse on creation! You are going to give us new bodies (Romans 8:23) and allow us to reign with you.

Yet the greatest promise that we have is that you will come and dwell with us (Revelation 21:3). You are planning to restore us to close fellowship with yourself for all of eternity.

So give us strength to endure the trials and sufferings of this life. Give us strength to wait patiently for your final deliverance. As we groan and struggle, let us keep coming back to you, trusting you to come to our aid!

And now we turn to your word, asking you to speak over us again. Give Steve strength and mind and heart to deliver it to us. And give us ears to hear, hearts to receive, and clarity to apply it to our lives. Let us receive your truth with joy.
